Since 1983, the Washington Heights Business Improvement District has served as an advocate for the small business community in Uptown Manhattan. As a 501(c)(3) private not-for-profit, our mission is to create a clean, safe and vibrant commercial corridor by providing supplemental sanitation services, promoting public and private investment, encouraging economic development and implementing capital improvement projects.
The Washington Heights Business Improvement District supports 250 commercial storefronts in a 29-block commercial district along 181st Street from Amsterdam Avenue to Fort Washington Avenue, Broadway between 179th and 182nd street and St. Nicholas between 179th and 183rd street. The BID collaborates with City agencies and local constituents such as elected officials, business, property owners and residents to enhance the district.
Our goal is to make W. 181st street one of the cleanest shopping corridors in NYC. Since February 2011, we contracted with Atlantic Maintenance, a company that specializes in cleaning and general maintenance of commercial areas. Our staffers are sweeping sidewalks, bagging litter, removing snow at the cross walks, cleaning street furniture, removing graffiti and providing high pressure cleaning of the sidewalks. The crew works 7 days a week from 8:00am to 4pm. These hours are increased during the summer months when the district experiences higher levels of foot traffic.
The WH BID is co-located with an NYC Business Solutions Center, a set of free services offered by the Department of Small Business Services to help businesses start, operate and expand in New York City. These services include financial assistance, legal advice, ways to score new business opportunities with the government, recruiting assistance or help with permits and licenses.
